In a large dutch oven or heavy pot, cook sausage, beef, onions, and garlic until well browned. Season with salt and pepper. Drain any fat. Stir in crushed tomatoes and half a can of water. Return to simmer. Repeat with tomato sauce and half a can of water. Return to simmer. Add tomato paste and tomato puree and cook through. Add parsley, basil, marsala wine, and sugar. Simmer uncovered for 3 hours. Sauce will reduce by almost half and the flavours will concentrate.
This recipe freezes well.
